Artist Statement
I am a contemporary art illustrator who creates her images in various mixed media substrates, including digital. I primarily work on paper but also include wood panels as another surface for my work. I depict narratives about pop cultural fairytales, other worldly stories that carried us throughout our childhood. Some of these “Fairy stories” or pop cultural references allude to parable like truths as an enchanting story or cleverly written narrative that points to an underlying reality or truth.
My aesthetics vary in depictions of pop cultural signifiers to help resonate with my audience and to build a connection to the story. It is a reflection of my childhood memories with each character and the roles they play. My current series of narratives are an amalgamation of two worlds, “The Princess and the Frog” meets “The Avengers.” The yo-yo is an intrusion in my series as well as the White Rabbit like a conscious reminder, every detail and signifier plays a part. Our perceptions of reality leads us to reveal that we have this longing of another world and something much more than the mundane. My body of work is an echo of that statement, all is not what it seems. My series of encounters are these magical moments that are just parts of a bigger story.
